Privacy policy
EnergyBalance is made by EnergyBalance Labs LLC. This policy says what the app collects, why, where it goes, and how to have it deleted. It covers the EnergyBalance app for iPhone and Apple Watch and the website energybalance.app.
The short version
- The app collects what it needs to work: your account's email address, the profile details you enter, the Apple Health data you allow, and the training you log.
- That data is kept on your EnergyBalance account so the app can run its calculations and your history follows you to a new phone.
- It is never sold, never used for advertising, and never given to data brokers. The app has no advertising software in it and no analytics software from another company.
- You can get a copy of everything on your account, and delete the account and everything on it, from inside the app.
What the app collects
Your account. Your email address. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the email address and an account identifier from them. Sign-in is handled by Amazon Cognito; your password is held there and is never stored on our servers.
Your profile. A display name, date of birth, biological sex, preferred units and time zone. Date of birth and sex are used to estimate what your body burns at rest.
Apple Health data you allow. The app asks before reading anything, and you choose what to share. With your permission it reads:
- Body: weight, height, body fat percentage and lean body mass, including each weigh-in and its time.
- Food: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, sugar and sodium, as daily totals from the food app you use.
- Activity: steps and active energy, as daily totals.
- Workouts: type, start and end time, energy, distance, average and highest heart rate, and the name of the app or device that recorded it.
- Sleep: minutes in each stage for each night.
The app does not read clinical or medical records, and it does not store a continuous record of your heart rate.
What the app writes to Apple Health. When you log a lifting workout, the app saves it to Apple Health as a strength training workout, with the energy and heart rate your Apple Watch measured during it.
Your training. Routines, workouts, exercises, sets, weights, repetitions, times and any notes you type. If you import your history from another app, the file is read to build that history and is not kept.
Your goals and settings. Your goal, your macro minimums, and the settings of your energy model.
Purchases. Subscriptions are bought through Apple. We learn whether you have an active subscription and to which plan. We never see your payment details.
Which screens are opened. The app notes which of its screens are opened and when, so we can see what gets used and where people give up. Each note carries a random identifier for that copy of the app, whether it is signed in, the plan in use, the app's version, and whether it is on an iPhone or an iPad. It is not tied to your account, carries no figure from any screen, and is deleted after 90 days.
Server records. Like any service, our servers record requests: the time, the address the request came from, and whether it worked. These records are kept for up to 30 days. Health figures are kept out of them.
What stays on your devices
Your iPhone and Apple Watch keep what the app needs to run without waiting for the network: your sign-in, your settings, a workout in progress, and a backup copy of your lifting history. These are part of the device's own backup, including iCloud Backup if you use it.
What the app does not collect
Your location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera. It does not track you across other apps or websites, and it has no advertising identifier.
How it is used
Only to provide the app: to work out your burn and balance, to keep your history, to keep your devices in step, and to answer you when you ask for help. The note of which screens are opened is used only to improve the app. Health data is not used for advertising or marketing, and is not shared with anyone for their own use.
Who handles it for us
- Amazon Web Services hosts our servers and database in the United States and runs sign-in.
- Apple runs Apple Health on your devices, the App Store, and Sign in with Apple.
- Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
- RevenueCat tells the app whether your subscription is active. It receives an account identifier and your purchase history for this app, and no health data.
Nobody else receives your data, unless the law requires us to hand it over.
Keeping it safe
Data is encrypted on its way between your devices and our servers, and the database is encrypted where it is stored. The database cannot be reached from the public internet.
How long it is kept
For as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your data is removed from our servers right away and disappears from our backups within 14 days. We keep a record that an account was deleted: a scrambled form of its identifier and the time, so that an old sign-in on another device cannot bring the account back. It holds nothing else. The note of which screens are opened is kept for 90 days.
Your choices
- Stop sharing Health data. On your iPhone: Settings, Health, Data Access & Devices, EnergyBalance.
- Delete your account. In the app: Settings, Delete Account. This removes your account and everything on it, and your sign-in with it. What is in Apple Health stays in Apple Health. Deleting does not cancel a subscription, which is cancelled in your iPhone's Settings; and RevenueCat's record of your purchases is kept apart from your account, so write to us if you want that removed too.
- Get a copy of your data. In the app: Settings, Export Your Data. It gives you everything on your account as a file you can open in a spreadsheet.
- Correct your data, or ask about it. Email support@energybalance.app.
Depending on where you live, the law may give you further rights over your data. Write to us and we will honor them.
Children
EnergyBalance is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
The website
The website sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies. Our host records visits the way any web server does.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version is posted on the website with its date and comes to the app with its next update. If a change matters to how your data is used, the app will tell you.
